This peptide sequence, biotin-GRPRTSSFAEG, corresponds to the sequence of GSK3 surrounding the serine phosphorylated by MAP kinase activated protein kinase (MAPKAP kinase-1) and p70 ribosomal S6 kinase. Acts as a substrate for Akt (PKB), Km=4 µM. The N-terminal biotin allows this peptide to be used in kinase assays with streptavidin-bound membranes.

The alpha chain encoded by this gene is required for hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) and spatial learning. In addition to its calcium-calmodulin (CaM)-dependent activity, this protein can undergo autophosphorylation, resulting in CaM-independent activity.
