Background Information:
Prolactin Receptor is the receptor for prolactin and is essential for embryo implantation and early pregnancy. PRLR and prolactin seem to be involved in all aspects of female reproductive function in mammals. PRLR is thought to be controlled by ovarian steroid hormones in the fallopian tubes. Ligand binding to PRLR is thought to play a role in the growth of malignant breast tissue and may be useful for future therapies.

Several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different membrane-bound and soluble isoforms have been described for this gene, which may function to modulate the endocrine and autocrine effects of prolactin in normal tissue and cancer.
