Background Information:
The hnRNP F protein is member of a subfamily of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs).
The hnRNPs are RNA binding proteins that complex with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA) and associate with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus. These complexes are associated with pre-mRNA processing and other aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport. There are more than 20 different heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) associated with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus of mammalian cells. These different hnRNPs display a range of affinities for a variety of ribonucleotidehomopolymers and ssDNA sequences. In constrast, hnRNP F protein as well as hnRNP H (a highly related protein) appear to bind only to poly(rG). These unique RNA-binding properties, as well as the amino acid sequence and other data showing a distinct intranuclear localization of hnRNP F and hnRNP H suggest they are unique from other hnRNP and play an important role in the processing of RNAs containing guanosine-rich sequences.

Background Information:
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) are thought to be involved in pre-mRNA processing. However, its role in the regulation of gene expression is as yet poorly understood. Proteins of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoparticles (hnRNP) family form a structurally diverse group of RNA binding proteins implicated in various functions. Recently, hnRNP proteins have been shown to hinder communication between factors bound to different splice sites. Conversely, several reports have described a positive role for some hnRNP proteins in pre-mRNA splicing. hnRNP-U, also termed scaffold attachment factor A (SAF-A), binds to pre-mRNA and nuclear matrix/scaffold attachment region DNA elements.

Background Information:
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein Q commoly refered to as hnRNP Q can be found as three different isoforms derived from alternative splicing of a single gene. This RNA binding protein is implicated in control of mRNA precursor splicing for the survival of motor neurons (SMN) protein, a gene. Loss-of-function mutations of SMN are linked to spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) a common neurodegenerative disease. It has been shown that hnRNP Q proteins interact with SMN, and this is interacton is required for efficient pre-mRNA splicing in vitro. Current data suggests that hnRNP Q is a splicing modulator of SMN.
