Description
Biochem/physiol Actions Arachidonic acid (AA) is an unsaturated ω6 fatty acid constituent of the phospholipids of cell membranes. Phospholipase A2 releases AA from the membrane phospholipids in response to inflammation. AA is subsequently metabolized to prostaglandins and thromboxanes by at least two cyclooxygenase (COX) isoforms, to leukotrienes and lipoxins by lipoxygenases, and to epoxyeicosatrienoic acids via cytochrome p450-catalyzed metabolism. AA and its metabolites play important roles in a variety of biological processes, including signal transduction, smooth muscle contraction, chemotaxis, cell proliferation and differentiation, and apoptosis. AA has been demonstrated to bind to the α subunit of G protein and inhibit the activity of Ras GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs). Cellular uptake of AA is energy dependent and involves protein-facilitated transport across the plasma membrane.
Quality Sigma-Aldrich will change the name of this product, eliminating the term "puriss." or "purum" beginning October, 2009. Please note that this is only a name change; the product qualities and specifications remain the same.

Description
Arachidonic acid is the keystone essential fatty acid at the origin of the arachidonic acid cascade. It is converted by cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, and epoxygenase enzymes into more than one hundred fifty different potent primary autacoid metabolites in species ranging from fungi to plants to mammals. Arachidonic acid is stored in tissue phospholipids in esterified form, where it comprises a small but critically controlled percentage of the polyunsaturated fatty acid pool.1↗ Arachidonic acid content is frequently measured by the saponification of the lipid fraction followed by methyl esterification and gas chromatographic analysis of the resulting FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) compounds.2↗,3↗ Arachidonic acid methyl ester can also be incorporated into dietary regimens or fed to cultured cells as a source of exogenous arachidonate.

Description
Arachidonic acid is the keystone essential fatty acid at the origin of the arachidonic acid cascade. It is converted by cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, and epoxygenase enzymes into more than one hundred fifty different potent primary autacoid metabolites in species ranging from fungi to plants to mammals. Arachidonic acid is stored in tissue phospholipids in esterified form, where it comprises a small but critically controlled percentage of the polyunsaturated fatty acid pool.1↗ Arachidonic acid ethyl ester is a more lipophilic form of arachidonic acid that can be incorporated into dietary regimens or fed to cultured cells as a source of exogenous arachidonate. It is one of the fatty acid ethyl esters that increase cytosolic Ca2+ concentration leading to pancreatic acinar cell injury due to excessive consumption of ethanol.2↗ Whereas arachidonic acid inhibits dopamine uptake, the ethyl esterified version does not retain this property.3↗
