Background Information:
Humans express at least seven alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) isoforms that are encoded by ADH gene cluster (ADH7-ADH1C-ADH1B-ADH1A-ADH6-ADH4-ADH5) at chromosome 4. ADH5 or alcohol dehydrogenase 5, or alternatively alcohol dehydrogenase class-3, Alcohol dehydrogenase class chi chain, Alcohol dehydrogenase class-III, Glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase, (FALDH, FDH, GSH-FDH, GSNOR), and S-(hydroxymethyl) glutathione dehydrogenase and encoded by the human gene named ADH5, ADHX, FDH is a cytoplasmic localized enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of long-chain primary alcohols as well as S-hydroxymethyl glutathione to release either NADH or NADPH coenzymes. ADH5 is also an important component of cellular metabolism for the elimination of formaldehyde, a potent irritant and sensitizing agent that causes lacrymation, rhinitis, pharyngitis, and contact dermatitis. Formaldehyde can also damage DNA, thus its elimination is doubly important and is essential in cells deficient in the Fanconi anemia DNA repair pathway, though the expression of ADH5 appears to be insensitive to direct exposure to formaldehyde at least at the level of peripheral blood cells. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-ADH5 rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on mouse kidney lysates and in paraffin embedded immunohistochemistry on human prostate cancer tissue sections.

Background Information:
Alcohol dehydrogenase is a dimer, weighing 80,000 g/mol. Alcohol dehydrogenases are a group of seven dehydrogenase enzymes that occur in many organisms and facilitate the interconversion between alcohols and aldehydes or ketones with the reduction of NAD+ to NADH. In humans and many other animals, they serve to break down alcohols which could otherwise be toxic; in yeast and many bacteria, some alcohol dehydrogenases catalyze the opposite reaction as part of fermentation. There are five classes (I-V) of alcohol dehydrogenase, but the hepatic form that is primarily used in humans is class 1. ADH2 is also known to modify diabetic risk.
