Background Information:
IRAK4, also known as interleukin-1 receptor associated kinase 4, and belongs to the tyrosine kinase related (TKL) family, which is important for innate immune responses. IRAK4 is the closest human homolog to Pelle and combines signals from the receptor complex in the plasma membrane with the cytosol. IRAK4 phosphorylates IRAK1 which is then recruited to the IL-1 receptor complex, resulting in mRNA stabilization. NF-kappa B is activated by the kinase activity of IRAK4 through the TLR and TCR pathways. Mutations result in deficiency of IRAK4 which leads to recurring invasive pneumoccocal disease, extracellular pyogenic bacterial and fungal infections.
